According to Piller, the idea of 70000 Tons of Metal was conceived in 2006 when he observed cruise ships from his apartment balcony in Vancouver, British Columbia. Piller then began a four-year process of planning, organizing, and finding investors for what would become 70000 Tons of Metal.
